The "20 for 30" Challenge!

Here's the challenge: commit to reading 20 chapters of Scripture every day for 30 days in a row (perhaps 10 in the morning and 10 in the evening...what better way to start and end your day!?), asking the Lord to change you and conform you to His will in the process! The purpose of the Facebook group shown below is to provide encouragement to those accepting the challenge. This isn't a competition. It's not about conquering anything. We never want anyone to turn their Bible reading time into a legalistic drudgery. Rather, we just want to encourage you to feast on the nourishment found in His word with more regularity, and research shows that by setting a goal such as the one put forward in this challenge, it's easier to form a lifelong habit.
I am using a slightly altered version of Professor Grant Horner's Bible Reading System, (and here is a link to Tim Challies' discussion of Professor Horner's Original Plan) which consists of reading 10 chapters of the Bible per session, with each of the chapters coming from a different section of scripture. There are a couple of PDFs available in the "Files" section of our group: one describing the System with a page containing the bookmarks based on Professor Horner's original grouping, and one containing the bookmarks I use, which is a slightly altered grouping. I printed out my bookmarks page, laminated the page (on both sides), then cut out the laminated bookmarks, as seen in our Group's cover photo.

You may want to use another reading plan, and that's ok! You might just want to pick a spot within the pages of Scripture and take off from there! Whatever works for you. Professor Horner's System works for me, and I love it.

There are 1,189 chapters in the Bible.  If you read one chapter per day, you will read the whole Bible in 3 years and 3 months. If you read 20 chapters per day, you will read the whole Bible in 59.45 days! #WOW

If you read 20 chapters per day for a whole year, you will have read through all the Gospels EIGHT times, the Pentateuch FOUR TIMES, Paul’s letters 8-10 times each, the OT wisdom literature TWELVE times, all the Psalms at least FOUR times, all the Proverbs TWO DOZEN times, and all the way through the OT History and Prophetic books about THREE times!

While you may certainly use an electronic Bible for this process...which I did for quite some time...I highly recommend, along with Professor Horner, that you use a physical Bible, and that you use the SAME physical Bible every day, day after day. I say that because there is an added benefit that you simply can't get by using an electronic Bible: as you progress, you'll begin to learn where EVERYTHING is in your Bible!

Although the name of our group contains “20 for 30,” the truth is that everyone reads at a different pace! The optimal pace for this challenge is fast enough to accomplish your goal, but not so fast that you don’t comprehend what you’re reading! So if that pace allows you to read 50 chapters per day, do “50 for 30!” And if that pace for you is more like “10 for 30” or “5 for 30” or whatever it is FOR YOU, then let that be your challenge, and get after it. We are here to support and encourage you whether you are reading 1 chapter per day or 100 (but if you’re reading 100, you scare me)!  #JustReadTheBibleEverySingleDay

We hope to see you in the group!
